Creating a pollen-free home – step by step

Every year, millions of Swedes suffer from pollen allergies and 2025 looks set to be a particularly tough year. A mild winter and early spring have already led to high pollen counts and experts are warning of a long and intense pollen season. To the article

How can you protect yourself and your family from indoor pollen?

Do you feel sneezing, itchy eyes and stuffy nose even though you are indoors? It’s not surprising because indoor air is usually worse than outdoor air, which means that your body never gets to breathe clean air free of pollen.

But there are solutions! By following a few simple steps, you can create a pollen-free zone at home and breathe easier, day and night.

1. Keep pollen out of your home

The first step to an allergy-friendly indoor environment is to reduce the amount of pollen entering your home.

  • Keep windows and doors closed during the worst pollen days.
  • If you need to ventilate, do so after a rainfall, when pollen levels are at their lowest.
  • Wipe door handles and window sills regularly, as pollen easily gets stuck there.

2. Minimize pollen in the bedroom

Sleep is often affected by pollen allergy, but there are many things you can do to get a better night’s sleep without a stuffy nose.

  • Change bedding at least once a week.
  • Shower and wash your hair before bedtime to avoid bringing pollen into bed.
  • Don’t wear clothes you’ve worn outside in the bedroom.

3. Proper cleaning helps against pollen

Cleaning properly is a key factor in reducing pollen particles already present in the home.

  • Vacuum with HEPA filter to capture the smallest pollen particles.
  • Wipe floors and surfaces regularly with a damp cloth.
  • Wash curtains and other textiles often – pollen easily sticks to fabrics.

4. Keep pollen out the front door

There are several things you can do to try to avoid bringing pollen into your home.

  • Change immediately when you get home and put used clothes in the wash.
  • Store outerwear in a wardrobe or in a separate room.
  • Keep a shoe rack outside the door and avoid entering with shoes.

5. use an air purifier – the most effective solution

Despite all the precautions, it is difficult to keep pollen completely out of the home. A high-quality air purifier is therefore one of the best investments for allergy sufferers.
An air purifier removes pollen particles and creates a pollen-free zone in your home, giving your body time to recover. Using an air purifier in your bedroom will help you avoid nasal congestion and get a better night’s sleep, while allowing your body to recover by breathing clean, pollen-free air throughout the night, which will help delay the allergic reaction the next day.
