When Jens and his wife built their house, they initially invested in a large food cellar to have plenty of space to store food and drinks in an energy-efficient and wasteful way. Now they have solved the problem of high humidity in the cellar with a dehumidifier from Wood’s – and at the same time more than halved energy consumption. Jens contacted Wood’s himself to tell them about his smart, energy-saving solution.
– When I compared measurements over a week with Wood’s dehumidifier SW38FW and the cheaper, simpler dehumidifier we had before, I saw a reduction in energy consumption by as much as 60 percent while we got higher efficiency and more efficient dehumidification. This made a real difference, what a super product this is!
A food cellar should have a humidity level of around 60% and a temperature of 5-8 degrees for food to be stored sustainably. In Jen’s food cellar, the temperature without cooling was far too high at 14-16 degrees, as the heat from the rest of the house caused it to heat up.
– I solved this with my own special solution that leads existing refrigerant from our geothermal heating through a fan coil unit in the basement. Jen’s smart cooling solution lowered the temperature in the cellar, but also caused condensation to form. When the cold met the heat from the rest of the house, the humidity rose to 85-90%. To get rid of the moisture, in 2019 Jens bought a simple dehumidifier with 150W power, without a built-in hygrometer (which measures humidity, e.g. WHG1).
– The first dehumidifier we bought had far too low an output, which meant that it had to run around the clock. This consumed a lot of energy, while the continuous operation raised the temperature in the food cellar. After being in contact with Wood’s salesman, Jens bought a powerful dehumidifier with higher power, specially adapted for basements. The choice fell on SW38FW and the result was immediate.


– With Wood’s dehumidifier, we have gone from the previous 110W average power to 44W when the dehumidifier is in operation, which is only when the humidity needs to be regulated. Although the dehumidifier only needs to be in operation for short periods, the humidity is around 60 percent, which is optimal.
A food cellar is an energy-efficient and sustainable way to store food and drinks, and a family can save a lot of money by not having to use extra refrigerators, making it easier to live wastefully.
– In the food cellar, we can put down the whole pot with what’s left over after we’ve eaten, or platters of party food directly from the table. It’s convenient and energy-efficient and reduces our food waste.
